First draft

This is my first draft I completed, evidently I still need to work on it. Currently, it does not appear to have the conventions of a typical magazine, I will need to alter the layout, add content and delete anything that is unneccessary. I must look at more magazines in order to replicate the conventions used.

Potential magazine logo

After completing my Iconography I thought of a name for a magazine and decided upon "BOOM"

I'm not sure if I will decide to use this name and logo in my final product.

Front cover template

This is a simple template for a front cover of my magazine, I feel that it used typical conventions used in magazines, although at the same time it is rather basic. I will need to make alterations to this template for my final product

Iconography

I gathered some images of the equipment used in the genre of music and tried to incorporate them into a logo of some sort

Fonts of other magazines

The fonts used in these Hip Hop magazines are simple and easy to read, something that I feel is essential for any magazine, the name of the magazine is predominantly displayed on the top left corner of the front cover. The text never covers the face of the artist displayed on the front cover, or the focus of the image. This is something I must ensure in my final product.

Magazine analysis

This is my analysis of the magazines "Kerrang!", "Q" "NME", "Vibe", "The Source" and "Spin".
I have stated the genre and target demographic of the magazine, where it is sold and the artists likely to be featured in the magazine.

Mood board

Target demographic and genre of magazine

I aim to target males between the ages of 14-19 with an intrest in Hip-Hop, Alternative Hip-Hop or Rock. Being a 16 year old male, I feel I could ensure that the audience are interested in the magazine simply by making it into a magazine I would be interested in reading. Obviously I cannot just produce a magazine solely on what I want and expect that to do well, so I will try to include features on artists that fit more into the genre of hip-hop.
I want to keep the layout of the magazine basic, and find a set colour scheme. I am considering white, grey and red but I don't want to make a definite decision right away. My potential colour scheme is based on other house styles of magazines such as NME, XXL and OK!

Thursday, 12 November 2009

This issue of the magazine has a very basic layout, it features the logo/magazine name in the top left corner with the slogan located above it.
The magazine's colour scheme consists if red, white and black in order to gain the attention of the audience and attract them to the main articles and features of the magazine. The cover features artists such as Method Man, Juelz Santana and Rick Ross as they arte involved in DEF JAM 25, they have highlighted the artists names in order to attract established fans of the artists.
The magazine is clearly aimed at hip-hop fans, as they simply state "DEF JAM 25" (The 25th anniversary of Def Jam records). Readers without an intrest in hip-hop would find themselves lost. I didn't even know this before I researched it.
I aim to replicate the style of this magazine to a certain extent, as I am creating an Alternative hip hop/Rock magazine as opposed to a pure hip hop magazine. I feel this is essential as fans of Alternative hip hop and Rock tend to differ greatly to fans of hip hop.
